Ice fishing is a great way to spend a winter day. You can enjoy fishing without the annoying bugs like mosquitoes that you have in the summer. But ice fishing is more than just cutting a hole and catching a couple of fish. You can have a lot of fun with friends and family on the ice, or even by yourself. You just need to be prepared.
You need to prepare for a great day on the ice. You don’t want to get out there and find you have forgotten something or you are too cold to fish! So the day before you go fishing, check and make sure you have all your gear together and loaded up for an early start. Some of the best fishing is before the sun comes up so plan to be out on the ice before dawn.
Keep warm! This is probably the thing that sends a lot fishermen home early. They just get too cold to stay out any longer! Dress warmly, but in layers so you can take some off if the day warms up. Get a few hand and foot warmer packets, the disposable kind that warm up when you activate them. Your hands and feet get cold first so these will help make your day more comfortable. Plus, your hands will get cold when you bait your hook with bare hands. It is nice to have a toasty hand warmer in your gloves when you put them back on!
Stay comfortable! There is no sense in sitting on the ice or standing around all day. Take a folding camp chair and relax. Take a book or a magazine and enjoy the peace and quiet while you wait for a bite. But don’t take your eyes of the jig for too long! You don’t want to miss a bite. If the wind always blows at your favorite fishing spot, consider taking a portable fishing shelter. They are easy to put up and it will keep the wind away so you can play all day.
Some fishermen take ice skates with them and get a little aerobic exercise while they are out on the ice. It is a great way to kill two birds with one stone, enjoy fishing and get a little fitness at the same time! Even just walking around and visiting with other fishermen is a great way to enjoy your day and get a little exercise in.
Ice fishing is a relaxing and fun way to spend a cold winter day. You can enjoy the peaceful beauty of a winter day and still come home with fish for dinner!
